“Nineteen point forty-nine meters,” whispers the Main-Donau-Kanal. That’s the average height difference the Schleuse Eibach overcomes each time it works. We’re standing at a crucial point on this vital waterway. This is the Schleuse Eibach. It is a marvel of engineering.
The Schleuse Eibach is located at kilometer 72.82 of the Main-Donau-Kanal. It stands near the southern end of the Nuremberg harbor. This lock is not just a passage. It’s a gateway connecting Europe’s waterways.
Construction of the Schleuse Eibach spanned from October 1971 to August 1978. It was part of the larger Main-Donau-Kanal project. The canal aimed to link the North Sea to the Black Sea. The Schleuse Eibach was designed as a water-saving lock. It uses three side pools to conserve water. This design minimizes water waste during lock operations.
Each lock cycle requires a substantial amount of water. It needs about 18.000 cubic meters. The water-saving design is very important. It helps to preserve resources.
The Schleuse Eibach has impressive dimensions. Its chamber offers a usable length of 190 meters. It has a width of 12 meters. The upper water level reaches 331.99 meters above sea level. The lower water level is at 312.5 meters above sea level.
Until 2007, the Schleuse Eibach had its own control center. Now, it’s remotely operated from the Wasser- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung des Bundes (WSV). The control center is located in Kriegenbrunn. This remote operation ensures efficiency. It allows for centralized management of multiple locks. Planned for 2024, the control of twelve locks will be transferred to the control center in Nuremberg. Later, all 16 canal locks will be managed from there.
The Schleuse Eibach operates around the clock. It is available throughout the year. This includes nights. Exceptions only occur during malfunctions, maintenance, or icy conditions. The lock also features waiting areas for both commercial and recreational vessels. There are even slipways for small boats. Small boats are usually handled during the day together with larger vessels.
Interestingly, muscle-powered boats are not allowed through the Schleuse Eibach. Instead, a trolley is provided for portage at the slipways.
As part of the European shipping network, the Main-Donau-Kanal is vital. It stretches from Kelheim through the Altmühl valley. It crosses the Franconian Jura and the Regnitz valley. It goes all the way to Bischberg near Bamberg. Sixteen locks overcome a total height difference of 243 meters. The 171-kilometer-long canal is 55 meters wide and 4 meters deep. It was completed in 1992. Construction first began in Bamberg in 1959.
