Once known as Lexington Park. Azalea Park is more than just a name. It represents a community’s transformation.

Azalea Park sits atop a plateau. It stands three miles east of San Diego Bay. Its elevation is around 300 feet. The neighborhood enjoys a moderate climate. An ocean breeze keeps Azalea Park cool in summer.

But let’s rewind a bit. In the mid-1980s, the Lexington Park Neighborhood Association decided to call themselves Azalea Park. However, the association eventually disbanded.

In 1993, a new association emerged. The Azalea Park Neighborhood Association started a campaign. They aimed to recruit LGBT residents. The goal was to transform the area. It was once crime-ridden with drug houses and gangs. The vision was a family-friendly neighborhood.

Linda Pennington, a key figure, observed Hillcrest’s revitalization. It happened when gay and lesbian residents bought homes there. She hoped for a similar effect in Azalea Park.

Pennington and others actively recruited at Gay Pride marches. They highlighted the affordable housing. They emphasized the welcoming environment. This strategy proved successful. The gay population in Azalea Park dramatically increased after 1994.

Residents take pride in their community. They participate in canyon clean-ups and neighborhood paint-outs. Azalea Park now blossoms as the Azalea Park Arts District.

Visitors discover sculptures and art installations. Murals and hand-painted signs denote the flower-named streets. The Manzanita Gathering Place offers a creative refuge. It features mosaic tiles made by residents. Local artists have moved their businesses here. They envision Azalea Park becoming a vibrant arts community.

The Azalea Community Park features a unique oasis. It is the Water Conservation Garden. It displays succulent plants and creative sculpture.

Azalea Park stands as a testament to community spirit. It shows the power of revitalization. It is a place where art and community intertwine.
