Hidden south of the Alte Kirche, along Limburger Postweg, lies the Evangelischer Friedhof Wellinghofen. This tranquil cemetery holds more than just the departed. It reflects the rich, interwoven history of the Wellinghofen community. The Evangelischer Friedhof Wellinghofen isn’t exclusively for members of the church. It also welcomes those of other Christian denominations, resting alongside their Wellinghofen loved ones. The Friedhofsverwaltung, located within the Gemeindehaus at Overgönne 3-5, manages the cemetery’s affairs. You can reach them during their opening hours: Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from 10 am to noon. Interestingly, the cemetery’s history is linked to the unusual story of two churches in one small town. Wellinghofen, once home to both Lutheran and Reformed congregations, maintained this unique parallel structure until the 1980s. This division even led to the construction of the Dreieinigkeitskirche, just a stone’s throw from the Alte Kirche, in the early 20th century. Eventually, in 1983, the two congregations united, forming the single Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Wellinghofen. This union created a larger, more vibrant community, extending from Hacheney to Wichlinghofen and Benninghofen to Lücklemberg. The Evangelischer Friedhof Wellinghofen stands as a testament to this unified community.
