Stepping back in time, let’s journey to 1881. This year marks the birth of the Oxford Baptist Chapel. It was nestled amidst the charming terraced houses of Albert Street in Jericho. This chapel wasn’t just a place of worship. It represented a distinct branch of Baptist faith known as “Strict and Particular Baptists.” Their beliefs were rooted in a strict interpretation of Calvinist theology. This included closed communion and a unique perspective on church membership. The Oxford Baptist Chapel stands as a testament to their unwavering faith. The chapel’s architecture hints at the Gothic style, a curious detail amidst the Victorian backdrop of Jericho. However, the congregation dwindled over time. Despite the changing landscape of Jericho, the chapel remained a spiritual anchor for its devoted members. They held firm to their beliefs, even as their numbers decreased. The chapel persevered, hosting visiting ministers who kept the flame of faith alive until 1992. That year marked a turning point with the appointment of Pastor David Cooke. Shortly after, the church formally embraced the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. This document, penned by English Baptists, codified their strict Calvinistic views. A period of growth followed, fueled by a small group of students. Many of them remained connected to the Oxford Baptist Chapel after graduation. Around 150 students passed through the chapel doors during this time, including a significant number of Americans on exchange programs. Church membership peaked at 18. Sadly, from 2003 onwards, young couples began moving away. The church struggled to recover from this loss. The small Sunday school closed its doors in 2005. Pastor Cooke’s resignation in 2008 marked the end of an era. The congregation held their final service on December 28, 2008. The building remained under the care of trustees. It eventually passed into the hands of a new Oxford Baptist Chapel, founded in March 2010. Today, the Oxford Baptist Chapel has a new home at “The Field” on Southern By-Pass Road. The pastor is Derrick Morlan. It continues to serve as a spiritual beacon in Oxford, albeit in a new location. The original building on Albert Street, however, holds a special place in the annals of Oxford’s religious history. It’s a reminder of a dedicated community who kept their faith alive through changing times.
