Right here stands Rajarathinam Stadium. It echoes with the stories of athletes and police officers. This stadium on Marshalls Road is more than just a sports venue. It is a testament to Chennai’s vibrant history.

The Rajarathinam Stadium is owned by the Tamil Nadu Police Department. It has long served as a parade ground for police personnel. Imagine the crisp uniforms and synchronized steps. Think of the echoes of commands across the field.

Before its renovation, the stadium was a hub for locals. People enjoyed morning walks here. Senior police officers held their passing out parades here. The stadium hosted sports meets and annual day celebrations for city schools. It was a place of community and tradition.

In 1954, a significant decision shaped the stadium’s future. Inspector-General of Police V.R. Rajarathinam decided to move the annual police sports meet to Madras. The Pudupet Maidan was chosen as the venue. The challenge was creating a suitable track.

The police took on the task themselves. They filled a large depression on the maidan. The result was a cinder track. It was inaugurated by Rev. Bob Richards, an Olympic pole-vaulting champion. He declared it one of the fastest tracks in India. Richards, also a parson, gave a motivational speech to the police.

Bad weather plagued the 1954 Police Sports Meet. Despite this, the decision to permanently move the event to Madras stood firm. This led to the creation of a permanent police stadium. Rajarathinam spearheaded the project. By 1957, the work was complete.

During construction, two more Olympic legends visited. Jesse Owens and Bob Mathias ran on the track. They appreciated the quality of the facility. Owens, a star of the Berlin Olympics, faced Hitler’s discrimination due to his race. Mathias was a decathlete with multiple Olympic medals.

For years, it remained the Police Stadium. In the 1970s, F.V. Arul, then Inspector-General of Police, proposed a change. The stadium was renamed Rajarathinam Stadium. It honored the man who envisioned the facility.

The stadium underwent a major reconstruction from 2009 to 2013. The renovation cost ₹ 31.655 million. The Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation handled the construction.

New facilities were added. A 400-meter track with nine lanes was built. A gallery covered with FRP sheets included offices, a library, classrooms, and dormitories. A VIP area featured a longue, an air-conditioned viewing gallery, and commentator rooms. Common and attached toilets were added. The stadium now boasts a main gallery and two additional galleries.

So, the Rajarathinam Stadium stands as a symbol of Chennai’s sporting spirit. It represents the dedication of its police force. Its grounds have been graced by Olympic legends. It is a place where community and history converge.
