“A dispute over profits” might sound like a mundane phrase. But it led to a horrific event here at Kotlyakovskoye Cemetery.

Kotlyakovskoye Cemetery is more than just a final resting place. It is also a site marked by tragedy and violence. The story I’m about to share is a grim reminder of the turbulent times Russia faced in the 1990s. It also shows the dark side of post-Soviet transition.

On November 10, 1996, a funeral service at Kotlyakovskoye Cemetery turned into a scene of unimaginable horror. A bomb exploded. It killed fourteen people and injured thirty more. The target was not random. It was members of an Afghan War veterans support group and their families. They were attending the funeral of Mikhail Lihodey. He was the former president of the veterans group. He had been murdered in 1994.

The bombing at Kotlyakovskoye Cemetery was carried out via remote control. Andrei Anohin and Mikhail Smurov were responsible. They were former members of the veterans’ organization. They had formed a splinter group. Their motive? A dispute over profits from cigarette and alcohol sales.

You see, veterans’ organizations had an exemption from import taxes. This allowed them to generate huge profits. This combined with the violent experiences of the veterans and the corrupt environment of gangster capitalism. It meant many of these organizations became criminalized. The attack at Kotlyakovskoye Cemetery exposed this criminal underbelly. It revealed the ruthless lengths to which people would go for financial gain.

The Kotlyakovskoye Cemetery bombing remains a stark reminder of a dark chapter in Moscow’s history. It serves as a somber reflection on the cost of greed and the fragility of peace. As we stand here, let us remember the victims of this senseless act of violence. Let’s also reflect on the importance of justice and accountability. Kotlyakovskoye Cemetery is a place of remembrance. May such tragedies never be repeated.
