It belonged to Ehelepola Maha Adikaram, a high-ranking official in the Kandyan Kingdom. Ehelepola was loved by his people and well-respected by the king himself. He was an ambitious man, who wanted to serve his country and secure a future for his family. However, events took a dark turn. The king grew suspicious of Ehelepola and accused him of treason. Believing he had been wrongly accused, Ehelepola fled from Kandy, but he and his family were ruthlessly pursued. The king ordered his wife, Kumarihamy, and their children executed. Ehelepola was captured and imprisoned. After the British took control of the Kandyan kingdom, they used the Walawwa as a prison. It is said that the building was altered and designed to accommodate prisoners. Some of the most notable rebel leaders against British rule were imprisoned here. The ghosts of these men still linger in the walls and the stories of their resistance are as captivating as the beauty of the building. Today, Ehelepola Walawwa is a somber reminder of the tragic history of a great man and a symbol of the fight for freedom.
