The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is located in Givat Ram. This area is Jerusalem’s government complex. The ministry has been around since 1948. In those early days, it operated from Sarona. Sarona was an abandoned Templer village near Tel Aviv.
Moshe Sharett was in charge of foreign relations back then. He had Walter Eytan as Director General. Today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains relations with 159 countries. It manages a large network. This network includes 77 embassies and 19 consulates-general. There are also five special missions.
These special missions include representation at the United Nations. They are in New York, Geneva, Paris, and Vienna. There is also an ambassador to the European Union in Brussels.

The design includes three wings. One wing houses the Foreign Minister’s offices. Another houses the diplomatic corps and the library. The third is for receptions.
Notably, the reception hall features onyx plates. These plates diffuse a warm amber light. In 2001, the design won an award from the Royal Institute of Architects of Canada. It won for architectural excellence. The building plays with light and shadow. It balances solid forms with open spaces.
The Foreign Affairs Minister is a key figure. This role is one of the most important in the Israeli cabinet. Only the Prime Minister and Defense Minister rank higher. Many individuals have held this position. Moshe Sharett was the first.
Interestingly, in November 2013, the ministry saw its longest labor dispute end. Diplomats reached an agreement to improve salaries and working conditions. This led to a new organization. It was the Israeli Association for Diplomacy. It aims to support the interests of the ministry’s staff.
