Güterfelder Haussee

“Lost your fishing rod, eh?” a gruff voice chuckled from behind me. I turned to see an old man, his eyes twinkling, gesturing towards the shimmering expanse of the Gütterfelder Haussee. “Happens to the best of us. This lake, she’s a sly one.” The Gütterfelder Haussee, nestled between Potsdam and Großbeeren, has a history as rich and murky as its depths. Formed during the Ice Age, this shallow lake, also known as the Gütterfelder See, has served as a local haven for generations. Its roughly 15 hectares, spanning about 400 meters in length and 200 meters at its widest, have witnessed countless summer days filled with laughter, splashing, and the quiet contemplation of anglers. While swimming was temporarily prohibited in recent years, a small bathing area with a grassy bank on the eastern side now welcomes those seeking a refreshing dip. Though a small sandy entrance exists, the wooden pier remains off-limits. Across the lake, the western side offers a more secluded experience, shrouded by a denser stretch of the trees that encircle the entire Gütterfelder Haussee. Anglers will find numerous spots around the lake, teeming with fish like eel, perch, bream, pike, tench, roach, and rudd. Be warned though, the lake bottom, at a depth of 2.5 meters, can be quite muddy. While the abundant wildlife, from water snakes to swans and cormorants, provides a tranquil backdrop, the Gütterfelder Haussee also has a lively side. The eastern bathing area occasionally hosts parties that can echo across the water, especially during the night fishing hours. Getting to the Gütterfelder Haussee is easiest by car or bicycle. The lake lies about seven kilometers from the Zehlendorf S-Bahn station. Cyclists can enjoy a scenic ride through Kleinmachnow and Stahnsdorf. If driving, be prepared for limited parking, especially on warm summer days. The small parking area on the north side often overflows, leading to cars lining the nearby streets. So, as you stand by the Gütterfelder Haussee, take a moment to appreciate its multifaceted nature. From its tranquil waters to its vibrant social scene, this lake offers a unique slice of Brandenburg life. Just be sure to keep an eye on your fishing rod.
