USS Recruit

Anchored in a sea of concrete, the USS Recruit stands as a silent testament to a bygone era of naval training. Here at Liberty Station, the former Naval Training Center in San Diego, the USS Recruit, nicknamed the “USS Neversail,” holds a unique place in naval history. This two-thirds scale model of a Dealey-class destroyer escort, and later, an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, served as a landlocked training vessel for thousands of recruits. Commissioned in 1949, the USS Recruit became a fixture at NTC San Diego. Recruits learned the ropes of shipboard life, practicing drills and procedures on her decks. They familiarized themselves with equipment like lifelines, accommodation ladders, and the engine order telegraph, all without ever leaving dry land. Below deck, classrooms and even a gas chamber provided further training experiences. The USS Recruit wasn’t just a ship; it was Building 430, a vital part of the bustling base. Over 50,000 recruits passed through her decks each year, learning the skills they needed to serve in the U.S. Navy. The ship’s unique nature even led to its decommissioning in 1967. The computerized registry simply couldn’t categorize a landlocked vessel. However, her story didn’t end there. Recommissioned in 1982 and refurbished to resemble a more modern frigate, the USS Recruit continued her training mission until the base’s closure in 1997. Today, the USS Recruit remains at Liberty Station, a visible reminder of the area’s rich naval history. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Naval Training Center, she stands as a unique landmark. While plans for a maritime museum have been discussed, the USS Neversail patiently awaits her next chapter, a concrete ship with a story to tell.
