The Fauler See’s story is interwoven with the history of the land. Before 1920, this land belonged to the Hohenschönhausen manor. In 1933, it was declared a nature reserve. The lake formed during the retreat of glaciers.

Alternatively, one can sit and listen to the birds. The Fauler See is a haven for many species. You can find waterfowl and songbirds here. Observations in the 1980s counted about 40 breeding bird species.
The Fauler See lacks a natural inlet. Rainwater runoff feeds the lake. To combat silting, the reeds are regularly removed. Mud is dredged to keep the lake healthy. A ditch system connects the lake to the Panke River. This creates a partial outlet. The groundwater level here is between 20 and 30 meters.
The Fauler See is accessible. It is an oasis in the middle of the city. You can reach the Fauler See by Tram or bus. The stops are Stadion Buschallee/Suermondtstraße or Am Faulen See. Alternatively, consider walking or cycling.
