In 1890 Katsutaro Inabata a man with a vision returned to Kyoto from Lyon France. He had spent years mastering advanced dyeing techniques. He opened a dye store Inabata Senryoten. This marked the humble beginning of Inabata & Co Ltd. This very spot in Kyoto housed that original store.

Inabata Senryoten wasn’t just a dye store. It was a hub of innovation. Katsutaro imported cutting-edge dyes and dyeing technology from Europe. He was instrumental in introducing the Lumiere brothers’ cinematographe to Japan. He even held the first public showing of projected motion pictures in Japan a landmark moment in the country’s film history.

Imagine Kyoto in 1890. The city bustled with life. Inabata Senryoten was a small part of that bustling scene. Yet it would grow into a global enterprise. Its influence extended far beyond dyes and film.

Katsutaro’s legacy is deeply interwoven with Kyoto. He established a dye house in 1897 employing state-of-the-art techniques. He later moved the headquarters of Inabata & Co to Osaka. Even though the main office shifted the impact of this Kyoto beginning remained strong.

The company’s logo the initials “IK” isn’t just a simple abbreviation. In Japanese it is a homonym for “love” and “respect”. These values have guided Inabata & Co since its founding.

Katsutaro’s dedication to Franco-Japanese cultural exchange is also notable. He established the Institut Franco-Japon du Kansai. This institute fosters language learning and cultural understanding between France and Japan. Inabata & Co continues to support this important cultural bridge.

From humble beginnings in a Kyoto dye store Inabata & Co grew into a multinational corporation. Its success is a testament to Katsutaro’s vision innovation and unwavering commitment to love and respect. This site in Kyoto is a silent yet powerful reminder of a global company’s remarkable start.
