Huasheng Temple, also known as Haimen Chan Monastery, stands as a testament to over thirteen centuries of history. Nestled in Guangzhou’s Huangpu District, this temple isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living chronicle of resilience, echoing with the whispers of revolutionaries and the chants of devoted monks. Established in 705 AD during the Tang Dynasty, Huasheng Temple has witnessed the ebb and flow of Chinese history. The temple’s grounds offer more than spiritual solace. They hold a tangible link to a tumultuous period in China’s past: the Anti-Japanese War. Huasheng Temple served as a vital activity hub for the East River Column. This guerilla force, operating in the Befeng area, relied on the temple and its surrounding community for support. The temple provided much-needed refuge for both the guerilla fighters and local residents seeking safety. Tragically, during the Huangqi Mountain battle of 1942, five monks from Huasheng Temple made the ultimate sacrifice. These monks, including the abbot, provided cover for the retreating main force. They faced intimidation and threats from the invading Japanese forces but refused to abandon their principles. Their bravery ultimately cost them their lives, as they were either hanged or burned to death. Today, a poignant reminder of this sacrifice stands within the temple grounds. A Luohan tree and the Cangjing Pavilion, damaged during the war, have been preserved. These serve as a stark yet powerful memorial to the courage and resilience of those who stood against oppression. The Huasheng Temple today isn’t simply a historical landmark. It’s a vibrant center for Buddhist practice and cultural art. It hosts a range of activities, from traditional Buddhist ceremonies to exhibitions of calligraphy and painting, martial arts demonstrations, and even charitable medical services.
