Why a lighthouse in a mountain city? That’s the question many ask when they first see the Faro del Comercio. This striking monument, a vibrant reddish-orange beacon against the Monterrey skyline, isn’t guiding ships to shore. It’s guiding the city towards the future, a testament to the enduring spirit of commerce and innovation. The Faro del Comercio, or “Lighthouse of Commerce”, was built in 1984 to celebrate the centennial of Monterrey’s Chamber of Commerce. It stands tall in the heart of Macroplaza, a vibrant public square, facing the historic Monterrey Cathedral. This location, surrounded by the city’s bustling center, underscores its importance as a symbol of Monterrey’s economic vitality. Designed by renowned Mexican architect Luis Barragán and constructed by architect Rafael Ferrera, the Faro del Comercio is a unique blend of modern and traditional Mexican architectural elements. It stands 69.80 meters high and 12.33 meters wide, a towering presence that commands attention. Its bright, almost fluorescent red paint, chosen to represent the vibrant energy of Monterrey’s workforce, is a stark contrast to the surrounding buildings, making it impossible to miss. At night, the Faro del Comercio truly comes alive. A powerful green laser beam, piercing the darkness, sweeps across the city skyline. This laser, a later addition, was initially designed with a complex three-color system. However, technical challenges led to a simpler, yet equally captivating, single green beam. This beam is a beacon of progress, symbolizing the city’s forward-thinking approach to business and trade. The Faro del Comercio, originally dubbed “Placa Roja”, or “Red Plate”, was a gift to the city from the CANACO, the Monterrey Chamber of Commerce. Its construction was a collaborative effort, driven by the vision of individuals like Rubén Alanís Albuerne and Francisco Zertuche González. These visionaries overcame initial skepticism and rallied support from local businesses to bring this ambitious project to life. Today, the Faro del Comercio stands as a proud symbol of Monterrey’s economic strength and a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation.
