Curious about a church with a past as complex as Erfurt itself? That’s the Predigerkirche. This Lutheran church stands as a testament to centuries of history. It began in the 13th century. It was a Dominican friary. Later, it became a focal point of religious change.

Predigerkirche. The name echoes with the voices of preachers past. It translates to Preachers’ Church. This name comes from the Dominican’s designation as Preacher Brothers. These friars once filled its halls. They spread their teachings throughout Erfurt.

Originally, the Dominican Order built the Predigerkirche in the 1200s. Meister Eckhart served as prior here. He was a mystic. The building evolved over time. Modifications occurred between 1340 and 1350. The bell tower was added between 1447 and 1488.

Imagine the scene in 1521. Magister Georg Forchheim steps up. He preaches the first Protestant sermon. The Reformation is changing everything. The Predigerkirche becomes central to Erfurt’s religious identity.

But the story of the Predigerkirche doesn’t end there. Around 1806, the church became a prisoner-of-war camp. French soldiers used it. This caused damage. Repairs followed around 1826. The Predigerkirche has been used for multiple purposes over time.

Consider the interior. It is 76 meters long. Two transverse screens divide the space. The rood screen dates to the 15th century. It separates the monks’ chancel from the public nave. The wooden choir dates to around 1280. The altar triptych displays scenes of the Crucifixion. It dates to around 1492.

During World War II, the Predigerkirche suffered damage. Original windows were destroyed. In 1949, new windows were made. They used glass shards. These shards came from war-damaged churches.

Pause for a moment and picture this. It’s 1989. The Peaceful Revolution is underway. The people of Erfurt gather in the Predigerkirche. From here, they march through the city. The church provides a space for change.

Today, the Predigerkirche stands as a symbol of Erfurt’s resilience. It has witnessed religious upheaval. It has been used as a court church. It has been put up for sale. It is a place of worship and a historical landmark. Its walls hold centuries of stories. The Predigerkirche continues to be a vital part of Erfurt.
