The Ebisu Bridge shares some history. It has been rebuilt many times. The Ebisu Bridge was converted into a steel bridge in 1878. Then in 1925, it was rebuilt as a reinforced concrete arch bridge. The current Ebisu Bridge was completed in 2007.
It was designed with the theme “Aquapolis Osaka”. A design competition was held. Both Japanese and international applicants participated. The winning design saw the bridge as the navel of Osaka’s Minami area. This became the basis for the new bridge. The Chiyozaki-bashi Bridge, like Ebisu Bridge, stands as an important landmark.
Think of the Koma Bridge. It spans the Higashiyokobori River. This bridge has existed since the era of Toyotomi. Envoys from the Korean Peninsula were welcomed here in ancient times. During the Edo period, a shogunate bulletin board stood at the west end of the bridge. Koraibashi-suji bustled with shops. It was a lively area. In 1870, the Koma Bridge was replaced with an iron bridge imported from England. People were astonished by its spectacular appearance. It was nicknamed Kurogane Bridge.
Consider also the Hijiri-bashi Bridge. It spans the Kanda River. The reinforced concrete bridge connects the Holy Resurrection Cathedral and Yushima Temple. It was built in 1927. This was part of the reconstruction of Tokyo after the Great Kanto Earthquake.
The Chiyozaki-bashi Bridge offers its own unique story. It may not have imitation jewels like the Koma Bridge. Nor does it connect a cathedral and temple like Hijiri-bashi Bridge. Yet, it serves its purpose. It links people and places. It carries the pulse of Osaka across the water. It stands as a testament to the city’s enduring spirit.
