What does Guangxi mean? Guangxi means Western Expanse. The name comes from Guangnan Xilu. This name was used from the Song Dynasty. Guangxi is an autonomous region in southern China. It is a land of diverse cultures and breathtaking natural landscapes.

Guangxi is known for its karst scenery. This scenery has been shaped by erosion over millions of years. The Li River is a highlight. Many say that Guilin’s scenery is the best.

The Karsts of Guilin are magical land formations. They look like mounds bursting through the Earth’s surface. They seem to display human-like character due to the weather conditions. Under fog, they are different than in direct sunlight.

Guilin is one of the three largest regions in Guangxi. It is behind Nanning and Liuzhou. Guilin is located in the northeast of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The Li River meanders through Guilin from north to south.

Guilin’s history is rich. Limestone protrusions give evidence that the area was once submerged under the ocean. Settlements date back to 314 BC. These settlers were drawn to the Li River banks. The city was renamed Guizhou around 507 AD. It became Guilin in 1940.

Guilin is home to many ethnic groups. About a dozen small ethnic groups live here. The Zhuang ethnic group dominates. This adds to the region’s diverse culture.

Guangxi cuisine is a mixture of Cantonese and Zhuang styles. It is known for snacks and spices. Guilin chili sauce is one of the city’s Three Treasures. Guilin rice noodles have been a local staple since the Qin Dynasty.

The Karst Mountains and caves in Guilin display beauty. They have been an ancient attraction. Inscriptions on the walls date back to 729 AD in the Tang Dynasty. Its imposing structures made this an almost spiritual place to visit.

Guilin is more than just a destination. It is an experience that touches your soul. From the Karst Mountains to the city’s rich culture, Guilin offers sights and experiences that you will always remember.
