Alongside the Sunday school was an adult study group. They explored their Jewish heritage. The meetings were lively. Jewish delicacies fueled the discussions. This early Temple Isaiah was a blend of practicality and passion.
Friday night services initially took place in a different church. A collection plate ensured they left a thank you gift. A memorable Bar Mitzvah followed a tradition of baking. It laid the groundwork for future celebrations at Temple Isaiah.
In a twist of fate a struggling nightclub on the Tunnel Strip became Temple Isaiah’s unexpected home. It was a repurposed space full of possibilities. They moved in. A tiki god stood tall above it all. Grass mats covered walls. A long bar sat untouched. Yet there was a sense of joy. A sense of belonging.
Hiring a rabbi proved unexpectedly challenging. Disagreements arose about leadership style. Debates over Conservative or Reform practices divided the community. Ultimately three rabbis shaped Temple Isaiah’s early years. Each rabbi added their own perspective. Each one leaving their mark.
The acquisition of an organ also sparked debate. Some questioned the organ’s place in a Jewish congregation. Others saw it as a symbol of growth and progress. Years of fundraising led to the dream organ’s installation.
