Imagine the bustling life of 72 convents nestled amongst 9 grottoes and 12 peaks. Monks walked these very paths. They chanted sutras within temple walls now crumbled. Picture the vibrant colors of Ming Dynasty frescoes once adorning the walls. Sadly only fragments remain today.
The story begins in 58-75 AD. A Huayan School monk Huisheng established the area. He built pagodas and temples. He envisioned a place of spiritual refuge. He laid the foundations for centuries of devotion.
The temple complex thrived for centuries. It weathered storms. It endured wars. Yet it persevered. It witnessed countless acts of faith. It held silent witness to countless prayers.
By 1949 the site lay in ruins. Overgrown with weeds it had become a forgotten treasure. Restoration efforts breathed new life into the area. Today visitors can still explore these majestic ruins.
