Built in 1798, Amir Mahal stands before you. This palace whispers tales of British administration and royal transitions. Once housing offices of the British East India Company, Amir Mahal transformed into a regal residence.

Let’s delve into the story of Amir Mahal. The British constructed it in the Indo-Saracenic style. The Carnatic kingdom faced annexation by the Company in 1855. This was done under the Doctrine of Lapse. Consequently, the Chepauk Palace, the Nawab’s official home, was auctioned. The Madras government then purchased it.

The Nawab relocated to Shadi Mahal. It was located on Triplicane High Road. However, the British deemed Shadi Mahal unsuitable for the Prince of Arcot. Thus, they granted him Amir Mahal in Royapettah.

Robert Chrisholm undertook the task. He converted the office building into a palace. In 1876, the Nawab and his family moved into Amir Mahal. Since then, it has remained the residence of the titular Nawabs of Arcot.

Imagine the bustling administrative activity. It once filled these halls. Then, picture the grand transition to a royal abode. Sir Zahir-ud-Daula Bahadur made Amir Mahal his home in 1876.

The entire area spans approximately 14 acres. Initially, it served as the Chief Court of Civil Judicature. Between 1872 and 1875, the Royapettah Police Court operated here. This was before the Prince of Arcot’s family moved in.

Consider the architectural blend. The Indo-Saracenic style reflects a unique fusion. Robert Chisholm, known for this style, likely contributed to the palace’s design during its renovation.

Even today, Amir Mahal functions as a royal residential complex. Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, the Prince of Arcot, resides here with his family. Though public access is limited, Amir Mahal has welcomed numerous political leaders and celebrities. Among them is Oscar winner A R Rahman.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru visited Amir Mahal twice. He visited as Prime Minister in 1955 and 1963.

Though tucked away amidst the city’s hustle, Amir Mahal retains its regal charm. It stands as a testament to history. It also stands as a symbol of enduring legacy. Take a moment to appreciate the stories. They are embedded within these walls of Amir Mahal. They bridge the past and the present.
