In 2004 a group of devout Romanians had a dream. They yearned for a place of worship a spiritual home in the southern part of Montreal. This was the genesis of Biserica Ortodoxa Sfantul Gheorghe. The church’s founding wasn’t easy. These dedicated individuals had to mobilize many families. They needed to raise funds and gather signatures. Their perseverance paid off. They united many Christ-loving people. They submitted a strong application to the Romanian Archdiocese.
The request for establishing Biserica Ortodoxa Sfantul Gheorghe was driven by a deep desire. Romanian Orthodox Christians in Rive Sud needed a nearby place of worship. They no longer wanted to travel long distances for religious services. The Eparchial Council approved their request. This decision was received with great joy and emotion by the Romanian community in Rive Sud. Biserica Ortodoxa Sfantul Gheorghe received the Holy Antimension. This was essential for the celebration of the Holy Liturgy.
On October 10 2004 the first Holy Liturgy was celebrated. A significant number of faithful attended. For nearly three years Biserica Ortodoxa Sfantul Gheorghe was hosted by the Roman Catholic parish of Saint Antoine in Brossard. From August 2007 until the summer of 2008 they moved to another church. They were hosted by the Catholic parish of Notre Dame d’Assomption. This was due to administrative and missionary reasons. They needed a larger place of worship.
Since the summer of 2008 Biserica Ortodoxa Sfantul Gheorghe has had its own place of worship. It is located in Saint-Hubert Longueuil. His Eminence Metropolitan Nicolae has overseen the parish’s activities. He visited on various occasions offering spiritual encouragement and instruction. He spoke about the efforts of other parishes. He said that Biserica Ortodoxa Sfantul Gheorghe would serve as an example for future communities. These words remain in the hearts of the parishioners.
