The Königliche Materialprüfungsanstalt was more than just a testing facility. It was a hub for innovation and learning. It served the public interest by conducting experiments and strength tests. These tests were done for authorities and private individuals.
Initially, the Königliche Materialprüfungsanstalt had two main departments. The older one focused on endurance tests using Wöhler’s machines. August Wöhler pioneered these tests. He subjected specially prepared test rods to repeated stress until they broke. The newer department handled other tasks. Later, a paper and oil testing section was added. The testing facility for construction materials was also incorporated.
Students frequently visited the Königliche Materialprüfungsanstalt. It was an important educational resource for them. They gained practical experience and knowledge. The collection likely held material samples. These samples underwent diverse testing methods. They were later used for demonstrations. Future engineers learned from these demonstrations.
Professor Spangenberg was the first director in 1880. Dr. Böhme temporarily replaced him a year later. Professor Adolf Martens took over the facility in 1886. At that time, the Königliche Materialprüfungsanstalt expanded to three departments. A department for paper testing joined the existing two. Volontariats were introduced. These allowed educated young people to gain knowledge in materials science.
In 1895, the testing facility for construction materials became a department. By 1904, the institution was known as “Königliches Materialprüfungsamt”. Professor Max Rudeloff became the director in 1915. He led it until his retirement. Wichard von Moellendorff took over in 1923. He remained president until 1928. After a three-year vacancy, Robert Otzen briefly became president.
After World War I, the institution was renamed “Materialprüfungsamt”. In the early 1930s, it was removed from the Technische Hochschule. It became the state Materialprüfungsamt Berlin Dahlem. This made it a direct precursor to today’s Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM). It also foreshadowed the Materialprüfungsanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg.
