Campus Martius Park is more than just a green space. It’s a vibrant hub in the heart of Downtown Detroit. It has earned the title of “#1 Public Square” in the U.S. by USA Today. The park has also received numerous awards for its design and management.
Let’s journey back to 1805. After a devastating fire, Judge Augustus Woodward envisioned a new Detroit. His plan mirrored Washington D.C.’s design. Surveyors marked the “Point of Origin” at Woodward and Michigan Avenues. This point is where the park stands. Today, you can see this marker on display. Even Detroit’s mile roads, like 8 Mile, originate from here.
In the mid-19th century, Campus Martius was marshy. The city council filled it with earth in 1847. This allowed for development. During the Civil War, the First Michigan Regiment received their flag here. Later, the Michigan Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument found its home in Campus Martius.
By the 1900s, cars dominated Campus Martius. Pavement replaced much of the green. But in 1999, a revival began. Mayor Dennis Archer and the Detroit 300 Conservancy formed a task force. Rundell Ernstberger Associates redesigned the park. The project was completed in 2004.
Campus Martius Park has many things to see. The Woodward Fountain is a major draw. Sculptures dot the landscape. In winter, an ice-skating rink opens. During warmer months, you can relax on the “urban beach.” Stages host live entertainment. The city’s Christmas tree graces the park each year. Campus Martius hosts the City of Detroit Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. It also hosts the Menorah in the D ceremony for Hanukkah. The Motor City Kwanzaa kinara lighting also takes place here.
