Beneath the shimmering surface of the Pacific off the coast of San Diego lies a world of sunken treasures at Sunken Harbor. It is a place where ships rest eternally. It is a haven for marine life. We call it Wreck Alley.

Sunken Harbor is no accident. It is a carefully constructed artificial reef. The story of Sunken Harbor begins with a vision. Visionaries sought to create a unique diving destination. They also wanted to provide a habitat for marine creatures.

The heart of Sunken Harbor is its collection of intentionally sunk vessels. Each ship has its own tale. The Yukon is perhaps the most famous. This Canadian Mackenzie Class Destroyer stretches 366 feet. It was built in 1959. The San Diego Oceans Foundation purchased it. They sank it in Wreck Alley on July 14, 2000. The sinking did not go as planned. The Yukon fell on its side. This made it more challenging for divers.

Then, there is the Ruby E. This 165-foot Coast Guard cutter has a rich history. Built in 1934, it once enforced Prohibition laws. Later, it served in World War II. In 1989, the Ruby E was intentionally sunk. Divers can explore its wheelhouse and engine room.

The El Rey adds another layer to Sunken Harbor’s story. This kelp cutter harvested kelp for 35 years. It made over 3600 voyages. In 1987, a U.S. Navy Demolition Team sunk the El Rey.

Not all of Sunken Harbor’s wrecks were intentionally placed. The NOSC Tower was an oceanic research tower. It stood half a mile offshore. A storm brought it down. Now, it is a vibrant artificial reef.

Even parts of the old Ingraham Street Bridge found their final resting place here. When the bridge was replaced in 1985, its remains were added to Wreck Alley. These pieces created new habitats for fish and other marine life.

As you descend into Sunken Harbor, you will see a kaleidoscope of colors. Corynactis californica anemones cover the wrecks. Large, snow-white Metridium anemones sway in the current. Scallops, barnacles, and tunicates cling to the structures. Crabs, starfish, and nudibranchs crawl along the surfaces. Schools of fish dart in and out of the wrecks.

The currents are cold and nutrient-rich. This makes Sunken Harbor a thriving ecosystem. Filter feeders compete for space. Kelps, fans, and algae grow. Lobsters hide in the crevices.

Sunken Harbor is a dynamic environment. The wrecks continue to evolve. They provide new habitats. They attract diverse marine life. It is a testament to human ingenuity. It is a celebration of the ocean’s power. Sunken Harbor offers an unforgettable experience.
