Contemplate this: a mosque named after Malaysia’s first Prime Minister. Here stands the Ar-Rahman Mosque in Kuala Lumpur. It’s a place of peace and historical significance. The Ar-Rahman Mosque has a fascinating story.

In the early 1960s, the University of Malaya needed a mosque. Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj laid the foundation stone on November 6, 1962. He was the first Malaysian Prime Minister. The Ar-Rahman Mosque was named in his honor. The name also reflects Allah’s attribute: “The Most Merciful or Compassionate”.

Construction took about a year. The cost was around RM 400,000, which was a significant sum at the time. On August 23, 1963, the Ar-Rahman Mosque was officially opened. The third Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail of Perlis, did the honors.

Initially, the Ar-Rahman Mosque was known as the University of Malaya Mosque. Soon after, the name changed. Residents from around 15 parishes came here for prayers. The Ar-Rahman Mosque became a central place for the community.

In 1988, the Ar-Rahman Mosque underwent renovations. The Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department helped with the upgrades. Most of the mosque was rebuilt. However, the domes, minaret, and roof eaves remained.

The original design blended modernist and Mughal styles. It featured long, flat roof eaves. Wide arches and onion-shaped domes added to its unique look. The Ar-Rahman Mosque represented a modern Islamic architectural expression.

The detached minaret is a key modernist feature. It has a curved base and a small dome. A round dome pavilion was removed to create more prayer space. The original yellow dome was replaced with a silver one.

Today, the Ar-Rahman Mosque has a larger prayer area. The former sanctuary still has its wide arches. The mihrab and minbar were moved to the extended prayer hall. The Qibla wall now has a contemporary design. It features plaster work and a built-in minbar.

In 2010, the Ar-Rahman Mosque started a unique program. It combined methadone treatment with prayer for drug addicts. Pharmacists dispensed the methadone. Doctors from the University of Malaya supervised the patients. The spiritual aspect aimed to prevent relapse.

The Ar-Rahman Mosque stands as a testament to history and compassion. It is jointly managed by the University of Malaya and JAWI. It remains a vital place for worship and community service. As you leave, remember the Ar-Rahman Mosque. Its story is one of faith, leadership, and healing.
