Ever wonder where the name Hull comes from? This quaint Massachusetts town carries a legacy tied to Kingston upon Hull, England.

Hello everyone. Welcome to Hull. Today we will explore the historical tapestry of this coastal New England town together.

Hull is one of the oldest settlements in the United States. It boasts a rich maritime past. Let’s take a walk through time.

First settled in 1622, Hull officially incorporated in 1644. The Massachuset tribe called this area Nantasket, meaning at the strait or low-tide place. Imagine the Wampanoags here. The Plymouth Colony established a trading post in 1621 to trade with them. Early settlers fished, traded, and salvaged shipwrecks. These activities shaped Hull’s character.

During the Revolutionary War, General Benjamin Lincoln oversaw the evacuation of Boston from Hull in 1778. A fort named Fort Independence was built on Allerton Point in 1776. Later, in 1901, Fort Revere was built on the same site. Then, in 1927, Fort Duvall was completed on Hog Island. Now known as Spinnaker Island, it was armed with massive 16-inch guns. These were the largest ever deployed by the United States.

Hull’s strategic importance continued into the 20th century. Lifesaving became an integral part of Hull’s identity. The Massachusetts Humane Society placed Huts of Refuge on Nantasket Beach after the American Revolution. Joshua James became the first Keeper of the Pt. Allerton U.S. Life Saving Station in 1889. He and his crews saved over 1000 people from shipwrecks. The Hull Lifesaving Museum now resides in the 1889 Pt. Allerton Life Saving Station.

Nantasket Beach is one of the finest beaches in New England. In 1825, Paul Worrick established the Sportsman Hotel on Nantasket Avenue. More hotels followed. Steamboats made three trips a day between Hull and Boston by 1840. Paragon Park offered amusement. It was called a marvel of fantasy. It even featured a ride based on the Johnstown Flood. Though the complex closed in 1984, the historic carousel and clock tower still stand on the boardwalk.

Hull is a place where history and natural beauty intertwine. From its early days as a trading post to its role in military defense, Hull has played a significant part in American history. As we conclude our tour, remember the stories of the people who shaped this town. Remember the brave lifesavers and the generations who enjoyed Nantasket Beach. Their legacy lives on in Hull today.
