Three golden altars dominate the chapel. This is the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple. Its understated exterior belies the rich history and spiritual significance within. Founded in 1912 the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple is one of 63 temples within the Buddhist Churches of America. Its origins trace back to a memorial service for first-generation Japanese immigrants. These Issei pioneers arrived in Utah working on railroads and in mines. Their faith in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism sustained them through hardship.

The temple’s history is interwoven with the community’s struggles. World War II saw the internment of many Japanese Americans including the temple’s minister. His wife continued religious services in his absence. This resilient spirit is reflected in the temple’s continued growth. It stands as a testament to the perseverance of faith. The building’s modest exterior a deliberate choice. It aimed to blend into the predominantly Christian culture of the time.

The interior however speaks volumes. Three golden altars stand as the focal point. The central altar features a gold statue of Amida Buddha. This is the principal object of reverence. Alters on either side display scrolls of Shinran Shonin and Rennyo Shonin. These figures are pivotal in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. A golden plaque inscribed ‘Dai Jihi’ meaning Great Compassion further emphasizes Amida Buddha’s significance.

Even seemingly small details hold profound meaning. The temple’s current fund drive to build a new temple reflects its expanding congregation. A recent Dharma Talk focused on calligraphy illustrating the temple’s blend of tradition and modern expression. The service features fragrant incense and soothing hymns creating an atmosphere of peace. The repetition of ‘Namo Amido Batsu’ underscores the reliance on Amida Buddha for spiritual peace.

The Salt Lake Buddhist Temple. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a living legacy. A story of faith resilience and cultural adaptation. A story worth exploring.
