Brusuglio first appeared in records in 1346. It was part of the Pieve di Bruzzano both civically and ecclesiastically. In 1751 it had around 250 residents. By 1771 that number had grown to 326. Imagine the daily lives of these early inhabitants their struggles their joys. They built this community brick by brick.
Under Napoleon’s rule from 1809 to 1816 Brusuglio briefly became part of Bruzzano. But the Austrians restored its independence during the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom. The census of 1853 counted 603 residents 669 by 1861. This small community persevered through periods of great change maintaining its unique identity.
In 1871 Brusuglio was incorporated into Cormano. This marked the end of its status as an independent municipality. But its history lives on in its architecture in its people. The church of San Vincenzo is a testament to this enduring legacy. The church is the heart of Brusuglio. It’s a place of worship and community gathering. This pluri-centenarian parish stands as a silent witness to centuries of Brusuglio’s history.
Brusuglio boasts another notable landmark Villa Manzoni. Once home to Carlo Imbonati it later passed to his companion Giulia Beccaria Alessandro Manzoni’s mother. The villa served as the Manzoni family’s summer residence. Alessandro Manzoni began writing The Betrothed here in 1821. He also conducted his botanical experiments in the villa’s gardens. A blend of history literature and nature.
The nearby Brusuglio cemetery holds the remains of Manzoni’s family. His mother and wife are buried there. This is a poignant reminder of the community’s connection to the famous writer. A quiet resting place a peaceful tribute.
