Did you know that the Santuario Madonna Pellegrina has a fascinating story? It is deeply intertwined with gratitude and community spirit. We are standing before a testament to faith. It is a beacon of hope for the neighborhood.
The story of the Santuario Madonna Pellegrina begins in 1950. Giuseppe Carpanelli had a near-fatal accident. His car was hit by a tram. This happened as he turned into his furniture factory’s courtyard. Miraculously he survived without serious injuries.
Realizing how close he came to death Carpanelli made a vow. He would build a chapel dedicated to the Madonna. This was in thanks for his safety. It would also benefit the growing neighborhood.
Despite some hurdles the first stone was laid on June 29 1951. Just over a year later on September 14 1952 the church was completed. Monsignor Giovanni Bandera blessed it.
The statue of the Madonna was a gift. The Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre donated it. Interestingly the marble flooring came from Milan’s Jewish Temple. It was being renovated at the time.
The church’s name is linked to a Marian pilgrimage. A statue of Mary traveled throughout the Diocese after the war. Cardinal Ildefonso Schuster organized this. The Santuario Madonna Pellegrina became part of this journey of faith.
From 1952 to 1965 Saverian missionary fathers led pastoral activities here. Later the new parish of Saints Peter and Paul was founded. The Madonna Pellegrina church then played a secondary role. Only festive masses were held here for many years. Marian rites in May and some weddings also took place.
The Santuario Madonna Pellegrina underwent minor renovations in 1991. The roof was repaired in 2002. Between 2003 and 2004 a major interior renovation occurred. This was thanks to the parishioners’ generosity. Architect Sr. Michelangela Ballan designed the changes. These gave the church its current appearance.
Inside the Santuario Madonna Pellegrina you can find notable artworks. The old altar’s panel shows the four Evangelists. It is now in the right transept. “The Madonna of Tenderness” is an ex-voto by Alessandro Savelli. You can see it in the left transept. A wooden crucifix by Ligurian sculptor Ceccardi hangs at the back. An artistic lectern stands in the presbytery. Above the tabernacle is a delicate painting by Daniela Benedini.
In 2021 the Santuario Madonna Pellegrina celebrated its 70th anniversary. It also became part of the “Cammino di Sant’Agostino” spiritual itinerary.
