Established in 1894 the Oporto British School stands proudly. It’s a testament to educational excellence. This remarkable institution began its journey with just 11 boys. The Reverend WS Picken MA served as the first headmaster. The schoolhouse in Foz do Douro was initially rented. It was purchased in 1922 becoming a permanent fixture.

The Oporto British School wasn’t always so inclusive. Non-British boys were only welcomed in 1902. Girls joined the school even later in 1914. Growth was slow initially. Pupil numbers remained small until after World War II. The roll finally exceeded 100 then. The chaplains of St James’ Church Porto served as headmasters until 1939. A fascinating connection between religion and education.

Initially a prep school the Oporto British School expanded its curriculum. Some students stayed on to take their GCE examinations. By the early 1960s Portuguese pupils received increased support. The school provided an English curriculum. A parallel Portuguese course was also offered. This ensured a balanced education.

The school’s growth accelerated during the 1970s and 1980s. A significant building program was needed. It provided accommodation and facilities for over 200 students. The early 1990s saw the introduction of post-IGCSE courses. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme was offered. This provided students with further academic opportunities.

Today the Oporto British School boasts over 550 students. A majority are from Portuguese families. A significant percentage are international students. The school continues to evolve. Its strong academic program and commitment to international education make it unique. The Oporto British School stands as a symbol of educational exchange and global perspectives. Its history is rich. Its future promises further success.
