Peeking out from the street is Maison Van den Heede. It stands as a testament to Art Nouveau’s exuberant spirit. Today, let’s delve into the story of this architectural gem. Maison Van den Heede is at 4 Rue de l’Abdication in Brussels. It is in the Quartier des Squares. Gustave Strauven designed it in 1902. He was a famous Brussels architect. Strauven also designed Maison Saint-Cyr and Maison Van Dyck.

Gustave Strauven was known for his originality. He was known for his exuberance. At Maison Van den Heede, windows dominate the facade. They take up over three-quarters of the surface. Look closely and note the building’s unusual proportions. The two sections have different widths. The smaller section is set back. The main section has a slightly curved base.

Three materials create a rhythmic pattern. Red brick, white brick, and blue stone alternate. The facade showcases a polychromatic effect. White brick gradually gives way to red brick as the building rises. The top floor has a mansard roof.

The small section features a series of stacked windows. These windows run through the center. The right section has an unusually high ground floor. A cellar window sits beneath the main window. Above this, a large bow-window occupies the entire section. On the mansard level, brick arches surround a dormer. Pilasters flank the dormer. Wrought iron grilles protect the ground floor windows. These grilles also form a balcony in front of the dormer.

Maison Van den Heede exemplifies Art Nouveau in Brussels. It is a short walk from another architectural treasure. The studio-house of sculptor Pierre Braecke is at number 31. Victor Horta designed it. Maison Van den Heede is more than just a building. It is a vibrant piece of Brussels’ architectural history. It shows Strauven’s unique vision. Take a moment to appreciate its details. Notice the interplay of materials and light. Let the spirit of Art Nouveau inspire you.
