Curiosity sparked. A subdistrict named after a village, six li from a city gate? Let’s unravel the story of Liulitun in Beijing. Liulitun Subdistrict, nestled within the bustling Chaoyang District, holds a captivating history. Its name, meaning “Six Li Village,” echoes a time when distance was measured in li, a traditional Chinese unit. During the Qing Dynasty, the village of Liulitun stood six li, about 3 kilometers, from Dongzhimen. Dongzhimen was a prominent gate in Beijing’s city wall. This distance gave the village, and later the subdistrict, its unique name. Liulitun officially became a subdistrict in 1987. A significant expansion occurred in 1993 when the area east of Honglingjin Park was incorporated into Liulitun. Imagine the changes over the years, from a small village to a thriving part of one of Beijing’s most dynamic districts. Today, Liulitun Subdistrict encompasses an area of 4.4 square kilometers and is home to over 75,000 people. The subdistrict is further divided into twelve smaller communities, each contributing to the rich tapestry of Liulitun. As you stand here, consider the generations who have walked these streets before you. From villagers measuring distances in li to modern residents navigating a bustling metropolis, Liulitun continues to evolve. It stands as a testament to the enduring connection between the past and the present in the heart of Beijing.
