Ever wondered what makes Boracay more than just a pretty beach? Boracay is a resort island in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. It sits just off the northwest coast of Panay Island. Boracay is more than just white sand.

This island has a story etched in its sands. Boracay’s history stretches back before the Spanish even arrived in the 16th century. The Ati people first called this island home. They knew it as Buracay. These early inhabitants cultivated rice and raised goats.

The name Boracay has a few stories too. Some say it comes from the Ati words “bora” meaning bubbles and “bocay” meaning white. Others believe it’s from the local word “borac” which means white cotton. This refers to the island’s soft white sand.

Over time Boracay transformed. Sofia Gonzales Tirol and her husband Lamberto Hontiveros Tirol began planting coconuts here around 1910. This gradually shifted Boracay into an agricultural community. Copra production and fishing became mainstays.

Tourism began trickling in during the 1970s. A German writer Jens Peter called Boracay “paradise on Earth” in his book in 1978. This put Boracay on the map for travelers. Backpackers soon flocked to its shores seeking a budget-friendly escape.

Boracay’s beaches gained acclaim as some of the world’s best by the 1990s. But this influx of tourists came with challenges. The island faced environmental strains due to insufficient infrastructure.

President Rodrigo Duterte took drastic measures in April 2018. He ordered a six-month closure of Boracay. This was to allow for major renovation works. The focus was on improving the sewage system. The Boracay Inter-agency Task Force oversaw the island’s administration during this period.

Boracay reopened in October 2018 with new rules. These rules aimed to address various issues and control future tourist growth. The beachfront was cleared and buildings were set back to create a buffer zone.

Today Boracay is aiming for 2.3 million tourist arrivals in 2024. This indicates a strong interest in Boracay as a prime tourist destination. Efforts continue to maintain its beauty. Environmentally-friendly practices have been introduced.

However, Boracay continues to respect the Ati people. Following the cleanup, land ownership certificates were awarded to Ati inhabitants.

Boracay faces challenges like all popular destinations. But its rich history resilience and commitment to sustainability make it a unique place. It is more than just a pretty beach. Boracay is an island with a story and a future.
