The imposing brick facade of the Naval Science Building stands before you. Its Art Deco style speaks of a time of strength and purpose. This isn’t just a building. It’s a legacy.

This building which was completed in 1947 holds a significant piece of Utah’s history and the history of the US Navy. It was built to house the University of Utah’s Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) unit. This was established in 1945. The building’s construction was a direct response to the needs of World War II. The V-12 Navy College Training Program aimed to quickly produce more commissioned Navy officers. The University of Utah’s building was only the third in the entire USA built under this program.

Inside the Naval Science Building you find more than classrooms and offices. A large room simulates the interior of a Navy destroyer. A 16-ton 5-inch anti-aircraft gun from the battleship USS Colorado is a dramatic centerpiece. This wasn’t just for show. These spaces were crucial for training future officers. They provided realistic simulations of shipboard life. The building even includes a small arms range in the basement. This was part of the rigorous training regime.

Another remarkable artifact is the ship’s bell from the USS Utah. This ship was tragically lost at Pearl Harbor in 1941. The bell was donated in 1961 and found a home in the Naval Science Building’s lobby in 2017. After careful cleaning and restoration it stands as a poignant reminder of sacrifice and service.

The Naval Science Building is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the dedication of those who served and trained within its walls. It represents a vital part of the Navy’s officer training history. It is a significant piece of the University of Utah’s legacy. It embodies the enduring spirit of service and duty. Its history resonates in the very stones that comprise it.
