Consider the echoes of a bygone era. We’re standing before Herz-Mariä-Kirche in Bochum. This church whispers tales of faith and resilience. It stands in the GÜnnigfeld district. This area was once part of Wattenscheid. Today, it’s integrated into Bochum. Herz-Mariä-Kirche is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the community’s spirit.

Let’s delve into the story of this sacred place. The foundation stone for the first church was laid on September 8 1895. This day marked the Feast of Mary’s birth. Lambert von Fisenne designed that original structure. The parish wasn’t officially established until January 1 1903.

However, challenges soon arose. By 1901, significant damage from mining subsidence became apparent. The first church had to be torn down in 1911. Undeterred, plans for the current Herz-Mariä-Kirche began in 1909. Construction started in 1911. The new church was consecrated on July 24 1912.

Herz-Mariä-Kirche initially belonged to the Archdiocese of Paderborn. In 1958, it transitioned to the newly founded Diocese of Essen. The church suffered war damage during World War II. Fritz JÜlkenbeck from Bochum oversaw its reconstruction from 1948 to 1949. He made slight alterations during the process.

In August 2008, the Herz Mariä parish was dissolved. Today, the church is part of the Parish of St. Gertrud Wattenscheid. This larger parish includes other churches and chapels in the area.

Notice the architectural style. Josef Franke designed Herz-Mariä-Kirche in the Neo-Gothic style. The stained glass windows add to its beauty. Egbert Lammers created them between 1960 and 1962. They filter light into the sacred space.

Herz-Mariä-Kirche stands as a reminder of faith. It reflects perseverance through challenges. Its history intertwines with the community. It continues to be a place of worship. It serves as a local landmark in Bochum. The church’s story is etched in its stones. It resonates in the hearts of those who gather here.
