Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the Quelle-Turm, a towering landmark that dominates the Nuremberg skyline. This 90-meter-tall structure, visible from miles around, has a fascinating history intertwined with the rise and fall of a German retail giant. Designed by Ernst Neufert and completed in 1964, the Quelle-Turm wasn’t always a beacon for advertising. It started its life as a humble chimney, serving the heating needs of the nearby Quelle mail-order company headquarters. But just like the company it represented, the tower aimed for greater heights.

In its heyday, the Quelle-Turm was impossible to miss. Four enormous illuminated signs, each displaying the iconic Quelle logo, turned the tower into a radiant beacon at night. Imagine the sight: four glowing squares, each measuring 8 meters across, lighting up the night sky. The residents, however, found the newly amplified brightness in 2002 a tad excessive. Their complaints about light pollution led to the signs being switched off, and the Quelle-Turm lost its nightly glow.

Despite the dimmed lights, the Quelle-Turm still stands tall. It’s a monument to a bygone era of German consumerism, a silent giant bearing witness to the changing times. The Quelle company may be gone, but their legacy lives on in this imposing structure, reminding us of the power of iconic branding and the enduring presence of even industrial buildings in the cityscape.
