Scaling the Hochplatte, a rocky giant in the Ammergau Alps, is not for the faint of heart. It’s a challenging hike, but the reward is a view that will steal your breath away. The Hochplatte, at 2082 meters, is the highest point in the Ostallgäu district of Bavaria, Germany. It’s sometimes called the Ammergauer Hochplatte, just to make sure no one confuses it with other mountains also named Hochplatte. This majestic peak is a plateau of Wetterstein limestone, standing proudly above its surroundings. It boasts two peaks, about 200 meters apart. The eastern summit, marked by a cross, is slightly shorter at 2079 meters.

The Hochplatte hike begins in Austria, at the Ammerwaldalm. The trail takes you through a lush forest, alongside the Roggentalbach stream, crossing it several times. It’s a steep climb, but the beauty of the Roggental valley makes it worthwhile. The path eventually leads to the Weitalpjoch saddle, offering stunning views of the Ammergau Alps. From the Weitalpjoch, the trail to the Hochplatte summit becomes even steeper. Dwarf pines give way to karst rock as you climb higher. Reaching the ridge, the view opens to the north, showcasing Lake Forggensee. The final ascent along the narrowing eastern ridge is the most thrilling part. Some sections are secured with cables, adding a touch of excitement to the climb.

The true highlight of the Hochplatte is the panoramic vista from the summit. The view stretches in all directions. You can see the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak, and the sprawling landscape of the Ammergau Alps. The descent offers a different perspective of the stunning scenery. Continuing west along the ridge from the summit, you’ll reach the Fensterl, two natural windows in the rock. From here, the path leads to the Roggentalsattel saddle and down into the Roggental valley. Then you rejoin the original path back to Ammerwaldalm. A hike up the Hochplatte is a test of endurance, but the unparalleled views and the thrill of the climb create a memory that will last a lifetime.
