Ever wondered what secrets lie within a seemingly simple church? Ljungarums Kyrka holds stories that stretch back centuries. It stands as a testament to faith and history in Jönköping.

Ljungarums Kyrka is more than just a building. It is a living piece of Sweden’s past. This church dates back to the 13th century. It has been a focal point for the community ever since.

Imagine stepping back in time. Picture the original church. It was a much smaller structure. Over the years Ljungarums Kyrka has undergone several transformations. In 1746 the church was expanded. The longhouse was lengthened by about 3.5 meters. The three-sided choir that you see today was added.

Not long after that, a wooden porch was built on the south side. But in 1830 a major renovation took place. The south porch was torn down. The main entrance was moved to the west end. A new wooden porch was constructed. The old southern entrance was reduced to a window.

Inside Ljungarums Kyrka many fascinating artifacts await. The altarpiece is on loan from Svarttorps Church. Anders Ekeberg created it in 1703. Bishop Hans Brask consecrated the high altar in 1524. An oil painting hangs on the south wall. This painting was created in the 1700s by an unknown master. Gunnar Zilo a local artist from Jönköping painted an altarpiece on the north wall.

In the sacristy a remarkable sacrament cabinet resides. It likely dates back to the 1400s. Ljungarums Kyrka also possesses an iron-clad wooden chest from the 1670s. Look for an epitaph dating back to around 1675.

The medieval baptismal font was restored in 1998. A continuous iron rod was used to join the foot shaft and bowl.

The church organ has its own story. Johan Nikolaus Söderling built an organ in 1836. It had six stops. Åkerman and Lund built another organ in 1900. This one had 11 stops. The current organ was built in 1967. Frederiksborgs orgelbyggeri from Denmark created it. The facade comes from the 1900 organ. The organ is mechanical.

Don’t miss the bell tower southwest of the church. This red painted timber-framed structure was built or rebuilt in 1763. Records indicate a bell tower existed here in the 1600s. An investigation in 1919 revealed worked stone foundations dating to the 1100s. The tower underwent restoration in 1993. New wood paneling was added. The sound hatches were replaced. The tower was tarred and painted red.

The bell tower has a roof and spire covered with wood shingles. Two bells hang inside. The larger bell was recast in 1699. The smaller bell was cast in 1763. Elias Fries Thoresson in Jönköping made it. The bell bears inscriptions. It lists those who contributed. It includes a verse urging listeners to come to God.

Ljungarums Kyrka offers a glimpse into centuries of Swedish history and devotion. Its walls have witnessed countless moments of joy sorrow and reflection. As you leave take a moment to appreciate the enduring legacy of this sacred place.
