“A library founded in 1609? In the midst of the Renaissance?”, you might ask, eyebrows raised in surprise. And you’d be right to wonder, for the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, right here in Milan, is indeed a child of that era. It was Cardinal Federico Borromeo’s vision to create a haven for knowledge, a bulwark against the rising tide of Reformation thought. He sent his emissaries far and wide, from the dusty shelves of Western European monasteries to the vibrant markets of Greece and Syria. They returned with treasures: ancient manuscripts, rare books, whispers of forgotten worlds. Imagine the excitement when the manuscripts from the Bobbio monastery arrived, filled with secrets dating back to the 7th century! Or picture the sheer volume of Vincenzo Pinelli’s collection – 800 manuscripts, including a copy of Homer’s Iliad so beautifully illustrated it’s known as the ‘Ambrosian Iliad’! The Cardinal’s vision went beyond books, though. He envisioned a place where art and knowledge intertwined. Thus, in 1618, the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana opened its doors, showcasing the Cardinal’s private collection of paintings alongside the library’s treasures. Today, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana stands as a testament to one man’s passion for knowledge and the enduring power of the written word.
