Can you imagine standing before a giant, sleeping giant? Cerro Azul, or Blue Hill as the Spanish call it, towers before us, a shield volcano on the southwestern edge of Isabela Island. This volcanic giant is one of the most active in the Galapagos, with its last eruption occurring between the months of May and June 2008. This eruption was a spectacular sight, featuring a fissure eruption on the volcano’s southeast flank that spewed lava flows for miles across the landscape.

Think about it – the Galapagos, a place teeming with unique species, is constantly evolving. The islands themselves were formed by volcanic activity, and Cerro Azul is a prime example of this ongoing process. It’s interesting to know that Cerro Azul, along with five other volcanoes on Isabela Island, were formed by a process called a mantle plume. This is essentially a “hotspot” of volcanic activity that creates islands away from plate boundaries, just like the Hawaiian Islands.

Cerro Azul’s caldera, a large depression at the summit, is evidence of past eruptive episodes. Imagine a giant soup bowl, turned upside down – Cerro Azul is shaped like that. The caldera is about four by five kilometers across and reaches a depth of 450 to 650 meters below the rim. While it might seem a bit small compared to other calderas in the Galapagos, it is fascinating to know that only Wolf Volcano on the islands has a deeper caldera than Cerro Azul. That’s how significant this particular caldera is.

The volcano itself is estimated to be about 350,000 years old, but its surface is surprisingly young, less than 5,000 years old. It’s fascinating to think that Cerro Azul has witnessed massive changes in the Galapagos over the centuries. The eruption in 2008 had a dramatic impact on the surrounding environment. But, while it was a devastating event, it also showcased the resilience of Galapagos’ wildlife. The endangered giant tortoises, native to the island, somehow survived this eruption.

It’s a reminder that nature’s power is both awe-inspiring and unpredictable. The Galapagos, with its stunning scenery and unique wildlife, is a place of constant change and wonder, a place where the Earth reminds us of its power and beauty.
