How did a temple end up with a name like Honkoku-ji Temple? It sounds like a riddle, doesn’t it? But here in Kyoto, riddles often unravel into fascinating stories. Honkoku-ji Temple, a beacon of the Nichiren Buddhist sect, has quite a tale to tell. Its journey began not here amidst Kyoto’s serene hills, but in Kamakura, way back in 1253. Originally known as Hokke-do hall, this precursor to Honkoku-ji Temple underwent a name change and a significant relocation in 1345. Emperor Kogen himself ordained the move, entrusting the temple to Nichijo, a former member of the Uesugi clan who chose the path of Buddhist priesthood. He brought Honkoku-ji Temple to Kyoto’s Rokujo-dori Street. But why? The Imperial Palace, you see, lay vulnerable to negative energy from the southwest, and Honkoku-ji Temple became its spiritual shield. Interestingly, the temple’s connection to powerful figures didn’t end there. In 1685, Shogun Tokugawa Mitsukuni, a man who appreciated a good gesture as much as the next, gifted the temple a piece of his legacy. He allowed them to incorporate the alternate character “Kuni” from his own name into the temple’s name, forever intertwining their fates. Today, Honkoku-ji Temple stands as a testament to the ebb and flow of history, a place where imperial decrees, shogunate patronage, and the enduring strength of faith have converged to create a site of quiet beauty and profound significance.
