Picture this A simple house on Hainallee 40 in Dortmund. It doesn’t look like much from the outside. Yet inside lies the heart of Die Christengemeinschaft a vibrant community with a rich history.

Die Christengemeinschaft in Dortmund isn’t just a church. It’s a place of religious renewal. It was founded by Heinrich Ogilvie. He was a miner in 1923 working hard to make a living. Despite his struggles he planted the seed of this community. Over 80 years later it has flourished into a significant religious presence in Dortmund.

The original community house on Heiligen Weg was sadly destroyed during World War II. Bombs fell and obliterated the building. This included a beautiful organ. But the spirit of Die Christengemeinschaft persevered. In 1954 a new building arose. This freestanding house was the first on Hainallee. It was soon surrounded by other houses making it hard to recognize as a church from the street.

In 2001 and 2002 extensive renovations transformed Die Christengemeinschaft. The addition of an apse fundamentally changed the altar area’s design. The apse added a beautiful rounded architectural detail. Signs now clearly identify the building as Die Christengemeinschaft. An informational board highlights their commitment to renewable energy. This is thanks to the solar panels installed during the renovations. They provide both hot water and electricity.

The community is constantly evolving. The core of their work is the Act of Consecration of Man. It’s a profound experience that fosters a strong sense of true community. This spiritual practice shapes their activities. Everyone is welcome to participate. Die Christengemeinschaft in Dortmund has approximately 200 members. Including friends and interested individuals the community reaches about 500 people. Together they strive to bring religious renewal to Dortmund. The Hornemann couple Arianne and Laurens serve as pastors. They have four children. They both attended Waldorf schools and have international experience. They bring a unique perspective to their roles.
