Phường La Khê, a seemingly ordinary district in Hanoi, holds an extraordinary past. It whispers tales of skilled artisans, royal connections, and revolutionary fervor. Today, we stand on land imbued with centuries of history. Phường La Khê traces its origins back to the 15th century as La Ninh village. “La” signified silk, while “Ninh” represented peace and prosperity, a fitting name for a village renowned for its exquisite silk weaving. Legend claims a dragon resided beneath La Ninh, blessing the land with fertile harvests and inspiring the village’s name. In the 15th century, La Ninh transformed into La Khê, emphasizing its connection to the silk industry. Phường La Khê’s silk products, including The, Sa, Vân, Đa, Quế, and Gấm, gained renown for their quality and intricate designs. These luxurious fabrics, woven with meticulous detail, even adorned royalty during the feudal era. The village’s legacy extends beyond silk. La Khê boasts a rich scholarly tradition, producing nine esteemed doctors during the Phong Kiến period, including Nguyễn Duy Nghi (1766) and Ngô Duy Viên (1769). Among its notable figures is Đông Cung Hoàng Hậu Trần Thục Hiền, a beautiful daughter of La Khê who became Queen. Phường La Khê also played a crucial role in Vietnam’s revolutionary history. Ngô Đình Mẫn (1905-1933) and Trần Tích Chu (1898-1933) emerged as prominent revolutionary leaders. Today, the Nhà thờ họ Ngô, a historical site recognizing Ngô Đình Mẫn’s contributions, stands in Tổ dân phố 4. The spirit of La Khê lives on. The Đình La Khê, Chùa Diên Khánh, and Bia Bà, recognized as national historical sites, offer glimpses into the past. The Bia Bà, where Đức Thánh Bà (Queen Mother of the Mạc Dynasty) was laid to rest in 1530, attracts numerous visitors. Phường La Khê continues to evolve, embracing modernity while honoring its heritage.
