Musicians Institute’s story began in 1977. It was founded as the Guitar Institute of Technology. Jazz guitarist Howard Roberts helped shape its curriculum. Pat Hicks co-founded Musicians Institute. He provided structure that turned Roberts’ vision into reality.

Originally, Musicians Institute focused on guitar and bass. Over time, Musicians Institute expanded. It now includes programs for vocals, keyboards, and percussion. The Recording Institute of Technology was added later. A Bachelor of Music Degree was introduced in 1994.

In its early days, formal rock and roll education was scarce. Universities mainly offered jazz studies. Musicians Institute filled this gap. It gave rock musicians a conservatory experience. Today, Musicians Institute alumni are educators at universities.

Hisatake Shibuya bought Musicians Institute in 1994. He introduced programs to stay current with the music industry. These included audio engineering and music business programs.

The Los Angeles City Council declared August 25, 2007, Musicians Institute Day. This recognized Musicians Institute’s achievements.

Musicians Institute has had several names. Former names include Guitar Institute of Technology and Vocal Institute of Technology. Today, it’s also known as MI College of Contemporary Music.

Musicians Institute offers certificates and degrees. Students can earn Associate of Arts Degrees with transferred coursework. Bachelor of Music Degrees are available in Performance or Composition.

Musicians Institute is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. This accreditation ensures high educational standards.

MI began above the Hollywood Wax Museum. Today, Musicians Institute has studios and performance venues. These facilities span several blocks in Hollywood.

The Musicians Institute Press creates instructional materials. These include books and videos. They cover guitar, bass, drums, vocals and film editing.

Many notable musicians have been faculty at Musicians Institute. These include Chris Broderick, Paul Gilbert and Steve Lynch. Alumni include Jeff Buckley and John Frusciante.
