Herdern was then a small winegrowing village under the ownership of the Dukes of Zähringen. In 1457, Herdern became an integral part of Freiburg, shaping its destiny alongside the bustling city. The Glasbach, meaning “Glass Stream,” gracefully flows through Herdern. It originates from the Rosskopf mountain, adding a touch of natural beauty to the suburb’s charm. The Lalli, named after the Alemannic word for “tongue,” perform their Ribbon Dance every Carnival Sunday in the Church Square. The Lalli Fountain stands as a testament to their vibrant tradition. It was inaugurated in 1980 during a mesmerizing nocturnal torchlight procession. Herdern offers a delightful blend of history, nature, and artistic expression.
