“Hundreds were so impressed by your wonderful hospitality”. Those words capture the spirit of Paisley St George’s Causeyside. This is more than just a church. It’s a welcoming community.
Paisley St George’s Causeyside stands on Causeyside Street. It also has a building on Nethercraigs Drive in Glenburn. The church serves the people of Paisley in these two locations. Its history stretches back centuries.
Let’s step back in time. Imagine Paisley in 1738. The Laigh Kirk opened. It was Paisley’s first new church since the Reformation in 1560. The growing population needed more space for worship. Paisley Abbey was holding three services each Sunday. The Laigh Kirk helped ease the pressure.
Fast forward to 1820. The Laigh Kirk moved to a new building on George Street. The original building on New Street became too small. It was renamed St George’s Low Parish Church.
More changes occurred over the years. In 1850 a new building was completed for the South Free Church on Causeyside Street. The congregations of Paisley continued to evolve.
In 1929 an Act of Union brought together different churches. St Georges Low Parish Canal Street Church and St Andrews joined. This created new congregations.
In 1985 St George’s Low and St Andrews united. They formed the new Laigh Kirk. They used the St Andrews buildings on Causeyside Street.
In 2011 Castlehead Church and the Laigh Kirk united. They formed Stow Brae Kirk at the Causeyside Street premises.
The story of Paisley St George’s Causeyside continued. On April 15 2021 Stow Brae Kirk joined in Union with Glenburn Parish Church. They became Paisley St George’s. They retained buildings on Causeyside and Nethercraigs Drive. That is quite a journey for Paisley St George’s Causeyside.
Today Paisley St George’s Causeyside is an active church. It offers Sunday worship at 11 am. You can attend in person or watch the livestream on YouTube. There is also a Sunday Club for children of all ages. It takes place in the large hall. The Boys Brigade Anchors Section meets on Tuesdays. New boys are always welcome.
The current minister is Rev Hazel Shaw. She is the first full-time minister of Paisley St George’s. She was officially welcomed on April 19. The worship service was filled with music singing prayer scripture and teaching.
Paisley St George’s Causeyside has a long and rich heritage. It continues to serve the community. It promotes God’s Word and welcomes all. The church supports people in Paisley and beyond.
