Under a bush arbor it began. Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church’s story unfolds right here before you. Founded in 1912 by Reverend E H Crooms and a devoted group the church faced early hardships. They lacked funds for land holding initial meetings in various locations. The first service on their purchased land was held under a simple bush arbor. Financial difficulties led to the group’s temporary disbanding. Years later under Reverend W M Sykes they returned to their land. Reverend Sykes guided the congregation for 18 years overseeing the construction of the first church building in 1926.
The church faced further trials. The Great Depression of 1929 forced the closure of Saint Luke’s doors for several days. Reverend R L Dickey became pastor in 1938. He and his wife commuted by bus. Later members provided transportation. Deacon Richard Fantop Sr rang the church bell. Everyone understood its distinct sounds. Before Reverend Dickey’s time baptisms took place in Buffalo Bayou near Detering and Memorial. Some members from that era are still active today.
Subsequent pastors led Saint Luke through growth and change. Reverend J D Blake introduced tithing. Reverend E S Dancy oversaw additions to the church including a basement cafeteria. The auditorium expanded and a baptismal pool was built. Reverend Donald G Burgs paid off the church mortgage. He organized the first male chorus. He started the Women’s Day Service and the church’s morning radio broadcast.
Reverend E L Edwards Jr pastored for over 33 years. His first sermon was titled Storm Birds. He established a bus ministry expanded the kitchen and fellowship hall. Reverend Mark C Davis’s leadership included paying off another church note. His first sermon My Desire for St Luke Church reflects the enduring faith of Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church.
