How about a journey to Yongdingmenwai Subdistrict? This place has a name linked to Beijing’s old city wall.
Yongdingmenwai Subdistrict sits in Dongcheng District. It is in the southern part of Beijing. The name comes from Yongdingmen. Yongdingmen means “Gate of Perpetual Peace”. It was once a front gate on Beijing’s city wall.
Let’s step back in time. In 1944, this area was part of Yongwai Borough. It belonged to Nanyuan District. By 1952, it became part of Chongwen District. That year, two subdistricts formed. They were Yongdingmenwai and Liulijing.
More changes came in 1955. Twelve nearby villages and streets joined Yongdingmenwai Subdistrict. A few years later in 1958, the two subdistricts merged into one. It became today’s Yongdingmenwai Subdistrict.
As of 2020, 64790 people called Yongdingmenwai Subdistrict home. Imagine nearly 19000 people living in every square kilometer.
Today, Yongdingmenwai Subdistrict is divided into smaller communities. As of 2021, there are nineteen communities. Pengzhuang is one. Zhonghai Ziyu is another. You’ll also find Bairongjiayuan and Guancun here. Taoyuan and Minzhubeijie are other communities. Liulijing is present too. So is Yangtaolu. Don’t forget Yangjiayuan and Licun. Baohuali and Ding’anli are also part of Yongdingmenwai Subdistrict. Anlelin, Jingtai, and Yongtieyuan add to the diversity. Finally, there are Tiantian Jiayuan, Fulaiyin, Gexinxili, and Gexinli.
Yongdingmenwai Subdistrict is more than just a place on a map. It is a place with a rich history. Its story is woven into the fabric of Beijing itself. From ancient gates to modern communities Yongdingmenwai Subdistrict continues to evolve. It preserves its unique identity.
