What if I told you that right here, in Millcreek, once stood orchards and farms, a far cry from the bustling suburb we see today? Millcreek, a city nestled within Salt Lake County, Utah, has a fascinating story to tell. Its journey began long before its official incorporation in 2016. Early settlers arrived in 1848, including Mary Fielding Smith, widow of Hyrum Smith, and her children. One of those children, Joseph F. Smith, would later become a prominent figure in the area’s history.

Millcreek remained largely rural until after World War II. Then, post-war suburban growth transformed the landscape. The area, however, resisted annexation by Salt Lake City, retaining its independent character. By the 1980s, Millcreek encompassed various neighborhoods known as East Mill Creek, Canyon Rim, and Mount Olympus. These distinct communities, initially separate census-designated places, merged under the single banner of Millcreek in the 2010 census. The population doubled, reaching over 62,000.

Seeking greater local control, Salt Lake County established Millcreek Township in 2002. This administrative entity encompassed not only the residential areas but also the undeveloped Mill Creek Canyon in the nearby Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The township aimed to empower residents in planning decisions and prevent annexation by neighboring cities.

Millcreek’s path to cityhood was not smooth. A 2012 ballot initiative for incorporation failed. Three years later, however, residents voted decisively for incorporation. In 2016, Millcreek officially became a city, electing its first mayor and city council. One of the major challenges since incorporation has been the development of a unified downtown area. The city identified the area around Highland Drive and 3300 South as a potential city center. This area, with its established commercial presence, sits adjacent to Brickyard Plaza, a shopping center annexed by Salt Lake City in 1979. A boundary dispute arose, resolved only after Salt Lake City agreed to transfer some property to Millcreek, allowing for a contiguous city center in exchange for Millcreek relinquishing its claim to Brickyard Plaza.

Today, Millcreek, a vibrant suburb, stands between Salt Lake City to the north and Murray and Holladay to the south. It’s a city with a rich past, visible in its blend of historic farmhouses and mid-century subdivisions.
