Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Brussels lies the Jewish Orthodox Community of Brussels. This community’s story is one of resilience, faith, and a deep connection to tradition. The Jewish Orthodox Community of Brussels traces its roots back to the late 19th century. It emerged as a haven for Jewish immigrants fleeing persecution and hardship in the Russian Empire and other parts of Eastern Europe. These newcomers sought refuge and a place to practice their faith freely. In 1905, a small group, led by Mr. Milstein, established a prayer room on Van Artevelde Street, marking a significant step in the community’s formation. This initial space quickly proved too small, and the congregation relocated to Rue de Lenglentier in 1907. Under the spiritual guidance of Salomon Bamberger, the community flourished. The Jewish Orthodox Community of Brussels officially gained recognition in 1910. It was granted the title “Communauté Israélite Orthodoxe de Bruxelles” (CIOB) in 1912. The growing community aspired to build a synagogue that would serve as a central hub for worship and communal life. This dream was realized in 1933 with the inauguration of a magnificent synagogue designed by Joseph De Lange. This Art Deco masterpiece stands as a testament to the community’s dedication and perseverance. The Jewish Orthodox Community of Brussels faced immense challenges during World War II. Many members were less integrated into Belgian society, making it difficult to find support and refuge during the Nazi occupation. Tragically, many perished in the Holocaust. In the aftermath of the war, Rabbi Steinberg spearheaded efforts to rebuild both the physical structure of the synagogue and the spiritual life of the community. He played a key role in establishing the Maimonides Atheneum, a Jewish day school that became a cornerstone of Jewish education in Brussels. Today, the Jewish Orthodox Community of Brussels continues to thrive, offering a wide range of services and programs. It oversees the Kashrut Supervision Commission, ensuring the availability of kosher products. It maintains a mikveh, a ritual bath, for the community’s use. The CIOB also provides access to a Beit Din, a rabbinical court, for those seeking guidance on religious matters. The community’s journey reflects the broader story of Jewish resilience in Europe. From humble beginnings, the Jewish Orthodox Community of Brussels has grown into a vibrant center of faith, tradition, and community.
